What is E2G2?

E2G2 - Energy & Environment Global Genius, is a global online competition for school students on innovations in sustainable energy & environment.

The E2G2 Challenge provides a platform for the school students (Grades 9 and above) to address critical energy & environment challenges through innovative concepts and solutions.

The uniqueness of E2G2 Challenge is that the contest is entirely virtual, and hence students from any part of the world can participate and win!

What are the Themes of the Challenge?

The contest is based on different energy & environment challenges that our team has identified. A contestant can propose an innovation for any one of the challenges. The challenges are based on the following broad categories & sub-categories:

How can the electricity yield from solar power plants be increased significantly?

A MW of a solar farm in a sunny region generates about 1.5 million units of electricity every year. This implies a capacity utilization factor (CUF) of less than 20% - that is, less than 20% of the total generation capacity of the solar panels is utilized to produce electricity. technologies, designs and processes that significantly increase the CUF to yield higher levels of electricity from the same solar farm can make a big difference to the worldwide contribution from solar energy, one of the most promising sources of renewable energy.

How can we make the generation and use of biogas far more widespread?

Most organic waste can produce biogas. Biogas generation from waste not only takes care of a problem (waste disposal) but also generates something of value in return – thus, a double benefit. Laste scale generation and use of biogas from organic waste can thus result in tremendous environmental and energy benefits. What are the innovations in biogas technology and operations that can make its production and use far more widespread than what it is right now?

How can we harness a lot more energy from the oceans?

Oceans represent a significant source of sustainable energy - in the form of wave, tidal, osmotic power, marine currents and ocean thermal energy. However, only a very small portion of the potential has been harnessed. What innovative technologies and solutions can dramatically enhance the amount of energy harnessed from the oceans?

What are the solutions and avenues to significantly increase the efficiency of air conditioning and cooling?

Use of air conditioning and cooling solutions is expected to grow at a dramatic rate in the next one decade, mainly in the developing economies with large middle-class populations. Present solutions for cooling require significant amounts of energy and hence, such a furious growth in the usage of air conditioners worldwide will contribute to significant energy consumption and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Highly energy efficient air conditioning and cooling solutions could make all the difference to this situation. What technologies and innovations can make cooling and air conditioning far more energy efficient?

What are the concepts, solutions and technologies to store electricity at low costs?

What are the smart ways to significantly reduce the use of plastics without making our lives uncomfortable?

It is perhaps not possible, at least in the short term, to completely eliminate plastics from our lives. But surely there are ways by which we can significantly cut down its use? That constitutes the challenge: What are the smart, practical, innovative and effective ways by which we can significantly reduce plastics use?

What technologies, solutions and processes can result in significant minimization of food waste?

Worldwide, over 40% of the food produced is wasted. A reasonable reduction of this wastage alone can feed a large percentage of those who go hungry everyday. But given the dynamics of food production and logistics, and also our lifestyles and consumption patterns, minimizing food wastage is not easy. So, here's the challenge: What innovative technologies, solutions or processes have the potential to dramatically reduce food wastage?

What are the emerging solutions that can recycle a diverse range of products at increased yields and at reduced costs?

Recycling undoubtedly is a smart and practical avenue to manage waste. But even today, only a small part of recyclable waste is recycled in most countries. The reasons are partly technical, partly economical and partly owing to poor systems and processes. What innovations in technologies, processes, policies and business models can enhance the effectiveness of recycling so that a much larger portion of waste going out of homes and industries get back into the system for use?

What are the sustainable and effective solutions for toxic and hazardous waste management?

Toxic waste management is a challenging area. Not only are current solutions to manage such waste complex and expensive, but a good many treatment solutions are not completely environment-friendly in themselves. What set of innovative solutions can help in building a sustainable management system for a range of toxic wastes?

How can we convert a range of solid, liquid and gaseous pollutants into useful products?

Many solid and liquid pollutants contain useful value within them. Effective mechanisms for treatment and material recovery from these pollutants can thus make their disposal more sustainable and even profitable! What are the technologies and solutions by which such pollutants be turned into something of value?

What concepts and business models can enhance the utility of mass transportation systems in urban areas and lead to much higher utilization?

Mass transportation is an effective avenue to make transportation more sustainable. At the same time, a good percentage of urban population worldwide does not use the system for a variety of reasons – lack of convenience and comfort being the main two. What are the avenues, processes and solutions through which we can make a much larger percentage of people use mass transport, especially for urban transport?

What can be done to make bicycles more popular and get many more people to use bicycles?

Bicycles do a lot of good to the environment, and to our health. But, they have their own limitations in this hectic world and our busy lifestyles. What indeed can be done to enable more people to use bicycles a lot more times in their lives?

How can take assistance from the oceans to make the world more sustainable?

Oceans are massive, so is the value they hold, in the form of food sources, minerals, metals, biodiversity and more. They also hold many times the CO2 than does our atmosphere! For all these reasons and more, the ocean is one of the most powerful natural resources. What are the smartest ways by which we can use our oceans for much higher sustainability of the planet?

What technologies, solutions and practices for residential and commercial buildings can result in little or zero water water discharge?

While zero water discharge for industries has been implemented successfully in many countries, what about residential and commercial buildings? What innovative concepts and solutions can make zero water discharge for these buildings a reality?

What are the effective low-cost and low-energy water purification systems and solutions?

In many cases, industrial and domestic water purification processes have high upfront and operational costs, the latter mainly owing to high energy requirements. What are the sustainable processes and solutions that can purify water at much lower costs, with a lower energy footprint?

What are the best practices for sustainable management of lakes and ponds, especially those in urban areas?

Water bodies in many urban areas are highly polluted with waste. Many of them are encroached by construction and real estate. Many more are poorly managed. Monitoring and maintaining these water bodies are critical to sustainability, especially for urban areas, because these lakes and ponds are essential for sustainable water supply for the neighborhood. What could be effective and sustainable ways to manage our lakes and ponds?

What are the smart and efficient ways for cities and townships to ensure water sustainability?

Many prominent cities worldwide have already had their brush with severe water scarcity. This trend is likely to worsen in future unless effective solutions for water sustainability are implemented. What are the innovative and effective technologies, practices and solutions that can significantly enhance urban water sustainability?

What sustainable materials can make buildings truly green?

While green buildings comprising a range of sustainable materials are already quite prevalent in many countries worldwide, there is still significant scope for even more sustainable materials to be included in these buildings. What are the innovative and emerging sustainable materials and alternatives that can make buildings truly green?

How can we replace a range of conventional chemicals used for residential and domestic purposes with eco-friendly and health-friendly alternatives?

A brief look around any home today will reveal dozens of different chemical-based products - for cleaning, washing, pest control, body care, in medicines, food and pretty much everything else! With increasing awareness of the adverse effects from such chemicals, there's a significant need worldwide for health-safe and eco-safe products that can replace harmful chemicals in use today. The challenge: What are the innovations and concepts that can convert a large part of our household chemicals into natural and healthy products?

What best of breed practices, technologies and solutions can make farming and agriculture more sustainable?

Over 60% of the world's population depends on agriculture for survival, says data from FAO. Well, so do the other 40% too, we reckon! Agriculture, not oil, provides the fundamental fuel (food) that powers humans. But the agriculture sector today faces significant sustainability challenges on aspects such as water scarcity, use of harmful chemicals, soil degradation, and more. What's also of concern is that current agricultural practices are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. For all these reasons, it is critical that the global farming sector adopts effective and innovative sustainability practices and solutions as early as possible. What indeed are these innovations and solutions?

Here's a stunning statistic: Forests cover over 30% of the total global land area! With over 4 billion hectares of flora and fauna, and water and soil, they are a critical contributor to environmental sustainability and resource security. What are the best of breed practices and effective innovations in forest management that can significantly enhance their sustainability?

What can be done to significantly increase the adoption of cleantech and environmental education in schools?

Getting children to appreciate nature and teaching them the concepts of sustainability from a young age is perhaps the best way to make them contribute for a better planet. However, in most parts of the world today, effective environmental education is woefully lacking in schools. What are the frameworks, policies, tools and techniques that can be employed to make schools worldwide provide effective cleantech and environmental education to millions of children?

How can we make great games and entertainment products for children centered around sustainability?

Who does not want to play games! Children especially can get hooked on to games for hours. What if we could make games and other entertainment products centred on themes of sustainability and the environment? They will help children learn useful stuff on sustainability while being awesomely entertained. The challenge: Suggest cool and effective games and entertainment product ideas for children.

What practical changes to our lifestyles can make a difference to sustainability?

Until a couple of hundred years back, we all lived lives that were in harmony with nature, and everyone – including the earth – was happy. But then our lives and lifestyles changed, and today we find that billions of people lead lifestyles that are poorly aligned with our natural environment. Perhaps we cannot wean ourselves completely away from our current lifestyles, but surely there are simple but practical concepts we can adopt for a start? What could be these practical concepts and ideas that can make modern lifestyles more environment-friendly and sustainable?

How can we make apartment complexes more sustainable through community efforts?

There are many simple community efforts that can make apartment complexes worldwide far more sustainable and environmentally friendly. What are these avenues, solutions, and practices that can be easily initiated by millions of apartment dwellers worldwide?

Who Can Participate in the E2G2?

The E2G2 is currently open only for School Students.

  • The Student should be thirteen(13) years of age or above.
  • The Student should be currently in IX, X , XI or XII grades.
  • Can be from any country.
  • Should possess a project Idea or a project prototype with the potential for further development pertaining to any one of the 100 given environmental challenges mentioned in the themes above.

Challenge Format

Stage 1 - Concept Stage

Concept Stage: In this stage, contestants submit a 2-page brief about their innovation / proposed innovation. This document should spell out the idea in brief, the problem it tackles, and brief inputs on the technology or process behind the innovation. 25 contestants will be shortlisted at this stage and proceed to the next stage.

The first Stage requires the Participant to answer the following questions :

  • What is your Idea about?
  • How can it address any one of the given problem statements?

Submission Format

  • The Write-up should be mailed to us as a PDF.
  • It should not exceed 2 pages.
  • It should contain your Name, Institute, your E-mail id for future communications.

Stage 2 - Prototype Stage

Prototype Stage: In this stage, the shortlisted contests will need to develop a prototype of their innovation/idea. They will be provided about 75 calendar days to develop the prototype. This stage ends with the contestants submitting their prototypes.

Submission Format

  • Images of the prototype should be submitted through mail.
  • The Images should be sent along with a document containing design and scientific information such as working principle and materials of construction.
  • The Images along with the document should be uploaded in Google Drive as a folder and link should be shared.

Stage 3 - Interview Stage

Interview Stage: All the 25 shortlisted candidates who submitted the prototype will go through preliminary interaction with the organizing committee and 5 will be Shortlisted for the Grand Finale .
In the Grand Finale, the finalists will participate in the online interview which will be live Streamed globally.This round will decide one winner and one runner among the 5 finalists.

Everybody is a Winner!-Prizes & Rewards

Letter of Appreciation: All participants get a letter of appreciation. This letter (an E-letter) from the E2G2 Challenge organization will be given to all registrants who abided by the terms & conditions of the challenge.

The E2G2 Merit Book: The participants who advance to the prototype stage will be listed in the E2G2 Merit Book along with their prototype.This Merit Book will be put up in our website which can be accessed globally,gaining the participant recognition

Cash & Non-cash Awards for the Finalists & Winners: These will comprise cash awards for the winners and customized incentives in the form of special recogination certificates for all the finalists.

What are the Event Timelines?

Given the overall theme – innovation from school students on things that matter most - we are fairly liberal in our terms & conditions, but some basic rules need to be followed, right? Here we go:

Age limit: The E2G2 Challenge being an online contest requires the participant to be thirteen(13) years of age or above according to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act(COPPA).

Originality: There has to be at least some degree of originality. We appreciate that no innovation will be fully original, and there will be some prior idea or product that it will be based on, but your idea should incorporate something that is unique or different from what already exists.

Blatant Copying Not Allowed: In this age of Internet & Google, it’s easy to find many innovative and cool ideas online. While we encourage you to review and analyse many such ideas, ensure that your idea should be your own and should not be a Copy-Paste of what already exists.

Don’t Submit Confidential Info: If you are working on an idea and have information that is confidential, please do not submit such information for this contest. Please note that this contest does not have any non-disclosure clause, and hence any information that you submit might be available to the public.
